Romantic Short Stories Week #3: Ex-flames

Here come’s Monday, and the time is 11:30 IST. And now as we march to a new month, here’s another short romantic story. This week’s flash is about rekindling the lost love. Hope you like it.

Week #3

Title: Ex-flames

I sit on the sofa and gaze out the window. Thick Gulmohar trees laden with the new foliage sway under the golden sun.

Today is going to be my last day in Vivek’s house. I’m going to embrace a new life. He did not react much when I mentioned him that we need to separate our ways. Anyways, he does not want kids yet, and I wonder if he just wants to remain in the second stage all his life.

Chirps of sparrows play a soothing serenade. Thin white clouds shift in the sky as the cold morning breeze blows in through the front window of the living room. A pair of pigeon perches on the window sill, one holding a dry twig in his beak.

“Life has four stages – the first stage where a person is completely dependent on others. It is the childhood stage.

The second stage is where a person discovers himself. It’s a stage of trial and error. He tries, learns from his mistakes, and makes choices. He starts believing in himself but also believes in materialistic success to be happy – money, wealth, accolades.

The third stage is when an individual thinks about leaving a legacy. It could be anything – a breakthrough innovation, an extraordinary product, or a happy adorable family.

And finally, stage four which is all about holding on what a person has achieved.”

I still remember these lines of Mr. Mathews. He used to teach us Philosophy in college. He was a character. Long hair with streaks of silver. The overgrown beard that he rarely used to trim. Irrespective of the trends, he would always wear beige colored baggy pants and a loose T-shirt. He perhaps was in his late forties, but his attire and appearance made him look ten years older than his actual age.

short romantic stories, mariyamhasnain.comThe fragrant wind blowing into the room caresses my cheeks bringing back some more old memories. Memories – I try to forget, erase, burn but even after so many years, they are still fresh in my mind.

As soon as I close my eyes and rest my head against the back of the couch, a pair of deep dark eyes shines in the abyss. Teenage love is not easy to forget.

His name, image, touch everything remain so fresh in my mind.

It’s been more than ten years being married to Vivek, but there has been something always amiss.

I wonder if rekindling the lost love is a good idea. Anyways, I won’t be having Vivek with me tonight.

I trace Ray on Facebook. And, within a couple of minutes, he accepts my friend request asking my whereabouts.

He never married. I can’t deny I still love Ray and so he. Oh my God how we have so much craving for each other even when ten years have passed. The flames of unfulfilled love still burn our souls, and we don’t have to convince each other of anything or reason anything. We just want to be together.

Romantic Short Stories Week #2: How to Lose a Guy

Here come’s Monday, and the time is 11:30 IST. A new week and a new short romantic story. This week’s flash is something mild and lighthearted. Hope you like it.

Week #2

Title: How to Lose a Guy

“I love him, I love him not.

“I love him, I love him not.

“Oh, Shit, I love him. Do I really love him?

“I don’t know. It’s just been three months, and his possessiveness has started bothering me. What to do with this Yasir named adhesive gel?”

Ezra asked Jasmine as she irritatingly plucked the last of the rose petal and tossed the twig in the overgrown wild bushes of the campus backyard.

“I think you better dump him and walk off. Three months! I swear I can’t go beyond one month with the same guy.” Jasmine raised her eyebrows taking a sip of her diet Coke.

“I know dear with so many attractive faces roaming around, it’s not wise to stick with a single guy. But, there should be a reason for the breakup. And, all my breakup skills fail when it comes to Yasir.” Ezra threaded her hair with her fingers leaning against the back of the backyard bench.

Romantic Short Stories: Your Weekly Dose of Flash Fiction, Week #2“He’s a mind controller it seems. Why don’t you ask him to meet you at a coffee shop and then turn up with a hot-looking guy, you know.” Jasmine nibbled on her sandwich as she handed the Coke can to Ezra.

“Foolish. Think something else,” Ezra said before sipping the cold drink.

“Okay…How about this – You go with him but drool over other hot-looking dudes. I’m sure he’ll dump you. I’m telling you – this trick works amazingly well with possessive assholes.”

“This sounds awful.”

“Fine, the last – you kiss his best friend making sure he watches you while you do the act.”

“I can’t kiss his best friend.” Ezra painfully curved her lips.

“Why?”

“Because Chirag has chapped lips, and he also suffers from gingivitis. Yasir told me once. Yuck!”

“Oh! God save his girlfriend from getting bleeding gums.” Jasmine took a deep breath as she grabbed the Coke can from Ezra.

Bring Bring

Ezra’s cell phone vibrated in her purse.

“Talk of the devil and the devil’s here. It’s Chirag,” Ezra muttered as she swiped the cell phone to attend Chirag’s call.

“What? How? Where?” She fired a series of questions on the caller as she rose to her feet and ran towards the main college premises.

“Yeah, I’m coming where is he?” Keeping the cell phone closer to her ear, she hastily ran to the interior courtyard while Jasmine tailed her till the end of the crowded hallway.

“What happened? You’re running like a shepherd boy who has lost all his sheep in the jungle.” Jasmine called her from behind.

“Yasir not well. He met with an accident. He’s sitting in the canteen.”

“Canteen?,” Jasmine’s eyes narrowed and her eyebrows grew V. “He should be in the hospital. What is he doing in the canteen? Eating samosas huh?”

“It’s a minor one silly. I need to go see him.”

“This is the time silly. Don’t bother and he’ll think you don’t care and will finally leave you.”

“This isn’t the time Jass. Hope he’s alright.” Her eyes glazed as she strode towards the college canteen.

Week – 1

Title: A U-Turn

Rains lashed onto my bare back as I scooped up her fragile frame and carried her out of the car. Perhaps, she’d passed out, couldn’t endure the pain she suffered.

Perhaps, she just pretended to be asleep. Never wanted to face the reality. Never wanted to see the man who left her alone in the dark of the night.

All alone, I didn’t know how long she waited for me.

Not bothering to look at her exposed thighs hidden scantily under my shirt, I made my way to the front door of the house.

She whined under the fur blanket as I cleaned the scars and bruises with warm water.

Signs of sufferings, a brutal assault. Someone had robbed my soul, assaulted the woman I loved the most.

Fuck.

I couldn’t protect her.

Monsters hidden underneath human skin ran away when I reached the spot where I left her.

A casual argument.

I didn’t realize when it transformed into a battle of sexes. Rants of feminism and gender equality. She forced me to pull over.

I could have stopped her, could have apologized. But, I did nothing when she got out of the car.

Instead of waiting for her to cool down, I drove away. It was an hour later I realized my mistake and took a U-turn in haste.

She quivered inside the blanket. Her whimpers communicated the trauma she bore on her soul.

“I’m here baby,” I whispered in her ear, caressing the entangled mess of her hair.

She opened her eyes.

Tears slid down the corners of her eyes.

“I lost it. I struggled but I lost it. They were four.” Her words pierced needles in my ears, shredding my skin and exposing the bones underneath.

“Calm down sweetie. You need rest. Shall I get something for you? How about a cup of hot chocolate.”

“I need you. Promise me you’ll never leave me again even when I tell you to go away. Even when I fight with you. Promise me you’ll tackle my tantrums. Hold me in your arms when I’m angry. Kiss me when I cry.”

“I Promise sweetheart. Do I deserve an apology?” I asked my gaze dipping to the carpet.

She held my hands. “Have you informed the cops?”

“Not yet. Do you want to do it now or we can go tomorrow,” I replied meeting her gaze.

Romantic Short Stories: A Weekly Dose of Flash Fiction, mariyamhasnain.com“Thanks,” she said, her eyes glistening.

“Thanks for what?”

“I thought you perhaps don’t want to involve the police because of your reputation of a clean guy. It could be hard for you at work. Your social life. Your friends. They will question.”

“Nothing’s more important than you. Life’s all about taking a U-turn and starting afresh. Please allow me to take that turn where I’m just a teenage boy who is deeply madly in love with a girl.”

She looked in my eyes as my grip tightened on her hand.

“I’ll get some hot chocolate for us,” I said holding back my tears.

Men don’t cry, do they?

The Miss Fortune Series: Fortune and Fame (Kindle Worlds Novella) – Book Review

The Miss Fortune Series: Fortune and Fame Fortune and Fame is a story of Sandy aka Fortune an undercover CIA agent and Georgia Fame, an attractive looking female who seems to hide not only her age but a lot more behind her flirting gestures and etiquette.
The story begins on an interesting note with Fortune driving around her two elderly friends Ida Bella and Gertie. The conversations between the trio were humorous and lively.
I liked the book as it gave me a real treat of description – the settings, sight, sounds, and smell of the small town of Sinful.
The next thing that I really appreciate is the construction of characters and dialogues. The author has done an amazing job in creating believable characters that are live and complex. The dialogues flow smoothly with the narrative and are entertaining and realistic.
The plot is interesting but I can’t say the story is fast paced. At some places it even loses its steady rhythm and kind of a drag with overdoses of description and dialogues, but the fact is that unlike other detective stories it is comparatively shorter and an easier read.
I liked this book and looking forward to reading some more slow burn detective stories like this by the author.

A BDSM Erotica – Holly Berry (Naughty or Nice?)

Erotic Romance Books[yasr_overall_rating]

Hurray! Here comes the weekend! 🙂 🙂 So, what are you doing this Friday evening? If nothing, then believe me the book I’m writing the review for would really get you a tingle of thrill here and a rush of heat there as you curl up with it under the sheets.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read this BDSM Erotica during the Christmas Holidays, and it indeed gave me a yummilicious treat. However, I’m writing the review quite late. Actually, I couldn’t get any time to give this hot and steamy romance book the treatment it deserved. So, I waited and waited and when I finally got a chance to squeeze some time out from my busy routine of managing blogs and writing, the first thing I did was to share the review with my friends.

The plot of the book was sweet and interesting, and it’s one of the few good romance books that holds a delicious mix of romance and erotica. And, not a typical one, but a BDSM 😉

This red hot steamy romance is a story of a Christmas fairy who lives at the North Pole and is actually a wish fairy. Holly is supposed to grant people’s wishes during the Christmas season. The story is quite imaginary with strong characters and delicious descriptions.

I loved Holly’s character from the first page. Her character displayed several shades and was very well developed and multidimensional.

I liked the character of Susan. I even loved to read about Spencer, though I thought him to be a baddie in the beginning. My assumptions soon vanished as a cute unexpected twist made him more likable.

This is not just an erotica but there is a sweet and cute love story that is really heartwarming. I loved the scenes and moments when Kian feels desperate for Holly despite being a dominating partner who cares for his sub.

I’ve never read a BDSM erotica, and this one was a quick introduction to the genre. I appreciate Jaye’s ability of beautifully blending the erotica with the celebrations and fun activities of the festive season.

Though I fully enjoyed the entire read, it was the ending that took my breath away. It was like a cherry on top over a divinely tasty dessert of Christmas.

This book will get 5 hot stars from me for its steaminess and 5 for Holly’s naughtiness. A Cozy Christmas Romance

Remember by Joan Carney[yasr_overall_rating]

Remember is very very Christmassy cute and adorable love story to curl up with during the holidays. The author has beautifully captured the vibrancy and liveliness of the festive season. The descriptions are so vivid that it felt like I was watching a Christmas movie. Carney has done a great job in sketching out the characters and making them live and believable. I can easily connect with Gracie, a girl that suffered from memory loss after drowning into a mall fountain. I loved the character of Emmy/Electra, the cat.

I liked Jack who was a complete husband material unlike Todd, a Casanova. But if you ask me who I would prefer then my unabated answer would be Todd. I don’t know but there was something that was quite appealing about his personality. I don’t know if it was a tinge of alpha male dominance or his bitter-love attitude towards his girlfriend.

At some point, I even wanted Gracie choosing Lucas. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and would highly recommend it, especially, if you’re looking for cozy and delightful Christmassy Love Story.

Start Over

Start Over by J. Saman[yasr_overall_rating]

Start Over is a sweet romantic story of Luke and Ivy. Ivy is a strong young woman passionate about work and career. Her life takes her to past when she meets Luke at a friend’s engagement party. Luke is the same man who she’d spent a night ten years ago. Though just a one-night stand, Luke and Ivy can’t stifle the flames of love and the passion that ignited between the two of them ten years ago. They soon realize that they’re very much in love with each other and can’t live apart. But since Ivy has career commitments and has to leave for Boston Luke has to keep himself away from falling for Ivy because of his own set of insecurities and dilemmas.

I liked reading Start Over. It’s a kind of romance that any romance reader would love to curl up with on a cold rainy day. The characters are strong and well-fleshed out. I liked the conversations between the two main characters and also between several other supportive characters. I liked both Luke and Ivy though Claire became my favorite because of her sportive and spontaneous personality that adds more fun and humor to the story.

There are times when the conversations get quiet lengthy and the writing shows a bit lack of a narrative. But that’s my personal opinion as I love reading more and more details about the settings, the weather, noises, and sounds, instead of fully devouring the dialogues.

That said, Start Over has all the ingredients of a perfect romance novel that would appeal to contemporary romance readers of all age groups.

Seasons of Love and War

Book Review – Seasons of Love and War by Brenda Ashworth Berry

Seasons of Love and War by Brenda Ashworth Berry[yasr_overall_rating]

Emotional is what I would say about Seasons of Love and War. Beth Ann and Kaylob are childhood sweethearts and are very much in love even as young adults. The young lovers are inseparable until the Vietnam War when Kaylob decides to return to the war voluntarily.

The book is a true portrayal of the plight of a young lady whose fiancé gone missing and is declared dead. She has to go on with life but she finds herself trapped in a mesh of emotional breakdowns, nightmares, auditory and visual hallucinations about her missing boyfriend. She never accepts that Kaylob is gone never to come back.

While she struggles to carry on with her life keeping herself busy in her Broadway career, Blake Tanner, her friend since high school, shines as a ray of hope.

Though it’s a well written, well structured and professionally edited book, the characters seemed underdeveloped and appeared somewhat flat to me. I even wanted to read about Beth Ann’s successful career as a dancer and singer and wanted to see her evolve as an independent woman instead of having flings with Blake and even willing to sleep with her childhood friend Frankie, but that didn’t happen.

That said, the book is an easy read and is flawless when it comes to technicalities including editing and structuring and would appeal to anyone who wants to read a well written well structured historical romance set in the era of crisis and war.

Princess Sia by Kou Zoya

Princess Sia[yasr_overall_rating size=”large”]

Princess Sia is a story of a young princess of the Kingdom of Inwia in West Africa who happens to be the epitome of beauty. Sia’s beauty is divine and people from far and wide just wish they could see the beautiful princess. As Sia grows older, she realizes that her charms are alluring, and soon her feelings of self admiration transforms into arrogance and egotism.

When she reaches the age of 16, his father, the king of Inwia decides to marry her off to a suitable boy, but Sia so arrogant and adamant doesn’t find any suitor to meet her expectations. She wants to marry a man who is extraordinary, a special person who possesses all the qualities of a heavenly prince, a man who can match her personality. In her quest of finding a suitable suitor, she marries a beast who comes under the disguise of what appears to be the most handsome and the skilled man to Sia.

Sia’s struggle starts from here as she finds herself trapped into a vicious game of the wild beast that holds her captive in a small hut in the midst of the bushes of the wild forest, guarded by a five-headed monstrous rooster.

Now, there’s only one man who can save her from the treacherous beast, a man who she insulted in the past.

Princess Sia is a sweet romantic short story or more appropriately a fairy tale that would definitely appeal to the teen and young adult readers of romance and fantasy. The language is simple and the writing flows smoothly. Written in third person point of view, the book captured my interest from the very beginning because of its simplicity and purity. The dialogues are well written and blend uniformly with the rich content of the prose.
And, at the end like all other fairy tales, Princess Sia does communicate a moral that indeed inner beauty is supreme and one should never disregard kindness and compassion.

I would give Princess Sia 4 out of 5 stars.

Book Review – Bound by Steel by Connie Lafortune

bound by steel[yasr_overall_rating size=”large”]

Wow!!! That was the first word that escaped out of my mouth as I touched the end of the book. The book seriously took me to a fantasy land. I really wonder if men like Ryker Steel exist in reality. He was so perfect in everything… I mean everything 😉 that it took me hard time not to fantasize about him. The author describes the characters so well that it creates live images of various characters in readers mind.

Now, coming to the story, Ryker rescues Lyra when her car crashes down during a bizarre snowstorm. Ryker brings her home and takes care of her as she recovers from the accidental trauma. While staying at the cabin, Lyra soon discovers that she can’t leave the place on her own wish. She has to embrace the truth that now her life is in charge of the owner of the cabin, i.e, her rescuer, Mr. Ryker Steel.

During the course of her stay at the cabin, Lyra finds herself lost in the masculine charms of her rescuer. Captivated by Ryker’s tough personality and the alpha male dominance, Lyra soon realizes that Ryker is the one who she always wanted in bed not her previous boyfriend Gage.

She lusted a man who held her captive but why couldn’t she just leave the cabin, that’s the suspense. And, not only that, there is hell lot of twists, turns, and complexities that ultimately take the readers on a roller coaster ride.

Ryker’s and Lyra’s chemistry was sizzling. Not only the steamy sequences but their conversations were equally passionate and sexy, especially, their dirty pillow talks.

All in all, Bound by Steel is a book that has everything in it. It has thrill, suspense, drama, romance, sex and lots of it that it will satiate all your hunger and desires.

The story is told in alternate POVs and that’s the best thing about it because it let me get into the skin of the characters and allowed me to feel what they are exactly thinking and doing.

Besides the steamy sequences that made me turn pages one after another, the twisted tale of lovers, their lovers, their friends, and their lovers, kept me on the edge of my seat all the time, and it was pretty frustrating when I’d to stop reading to follow through my daily routine. Needless to mention, Bound by Steel kept me coming back till I finished it.

Lastly, I highly recommend this book to all those who are looking for a sexy romance novel with lots of intrigue and plot twists to curl up with.

My Rating for Bound by Steel would be 5 steaming stars!!!
